I have two philosophies:
“If you’re not in the arena also getting your ass kicked, I’m not interested in your feedback.”
And
“The critique of the artwork is not a critique of the artist.”
The first is taken directly from the lips of Brene Brown in a TED Talk that changed my life, which I will link below.
The second is something I learned in school when I received what was probably the WORST critique from a teacher I have ever had. My professor sat with me one night and said, “Britt, you are doing something dangerous – you are confusing the worth of your work with your self worth. Just because I find faults in your designs doesn’t mean I find fault in you as a person. I’m critiquing your artwork to help your skills grow and flourish. I’m not finding fault in you.”
